Natural Neo-Citron for Adults

I think I'm the only person on the planet who didn't know that Neo-Citron is actually a medicinal beverage, full of Tylenol or something - I always assumed it was just a flavor packet.

Either way, I used to love the stuff as a kid, and since I've had the sniffles this week I wanted to enjoy something like it.  However, I like to avoid taking medicine when I can, so this time I took the route of making a drink with my favorite natural medicine - booze!

Okay, okay, booze may not be medicine, but sometimes you just want something a little stronger than a mug of hot tea.  Which is basically what this drink is: tea with lemon, sweetener and booze.  Easy peasy, and oh-so-comforting for a cold, especially when it's cold outside!

Natural Neo-Citron for Adults
Serves 1

Ingredients:

1 cup of very hot tea (Jasmine or green are my faves)
1 1/2 oz. bourbon (other whiskies or dark rum would work too, I just prefer bourbon)
1 oz. fresh lemon juice
1/2 oz. agave (or another neutral syrupy sweetener)

Directions:

Just mix everything together in a mug and enjoy hot.  For maximum enjoyment, get someone else to make it for you (thanks Mike!).

  1. I approve of adding alcohol to most anything but truly do think it helps especially when yr sick. Apparently when my mom or her brothers were sick (well, you know, with a cold) as kids, my grandmother would make them hot tea with whiskey and send them to bed to sweat out the cold (and the booze) under the covers!
    Feel better, anyway.

    1. Ha ha, what a badass grandma. :) I don't really get it, but for one reason or another it makes me feel more human when I'm illin'. Weird but I'll take it. Also hope you've been doing okay what with the storm and all!

  2. Bourbon definitely cures what ails ya.
I never tried neo-citron until I was an adult, and I love drinking a cup when I'm sick, there's something just so comforting about it. That's great that you came up with a medicine free version, now I can chug it back without passing out from the drugs...just the booze.

  3. I've never heard of neo-citron! It's an American thing, is it?

I like the idea though - take some healthy stuff, add some booze, and you're away. If the healthy stuff doesn't make you feel better, the booze will make you forget either way!

    Rum for me please!

  4. I haven't heard of this before but it sounds a bit like a product we have here. I tend to go for ginger and lemon in hot water + ginger garlic tablets but I bet your drink works really well!

    I hope you're feeling better now :)

  5. I always pour boiling water over lemon and ginger when sick, but I've never thought to add some special "medicine"!!

  6. Medicinal or not, this sounds like just what the doctor ordered. It's also one of the few recipes that I would still be able to make without power, thanks to my gas stove! In my cold, dark house, this will really hit the spot tonight.
